Scheerhorns and Open D?

Folks,

Rather than pile on to the monster National/Scheerhorn thread below, I wanted to ask a very specific question on Scheerhorns, as I am also eyeballing the new National offering.

I play in Open D as my main tuning.  I know it's a tad unusual but it suits the style I play.  I have a GoldTone Beard set up for Open D with strings .018-.022-.030w-.036-.053-.068.  And yes, I do need that beefier low D string in order to keep my alt bass picking crisp on the low end.

The Gold Tone Beard handles this very well, with no issues - in fact the stock nut/bridge slots worked as is.  And the instrument seems to embrace the tuning quite well, with a nice full and rich tone (not bad for a budget axe).

Anyone have experience with Scheerhorns in Open D, and especially using beefier string gauges like the ones I use?

I'd appreciate any commentary.

thanks!

Uncle Jack

Tips & Tricks for those attending Resosummit

I thought I'd start a discussion with some tips and tricks I've picked up from attending previous Resosummits. Please add your advice and experience as you like.

  • Talk to everybody! I haven't been bitten once at Resosummit.
  • Stay hydrated. There will be water machines in the lobby and elsewhere.
  • If you need a break, there are plenty of dining options a very short walk away. I like the San Antonio Taco Company because it's fast and cheap. The Mellow Mushroom has good pizza.
  • Diagonally across the street from the Station Inn is the Turnip Truck Natural Market, sort of a Whole Foods type grocery and deli. They have very good food and are a good choice for a fast meal before the Station Inn (unless you prefer the pizza at the Station Inn). There's also a frozen yogurt shop in that same complex.

ResoSummit highlights & thanks

Hard to believe that ResoSummit 2012 is over.

Highights for me:
All the Station Inn shows -- I'm still hopeful that 100% of my hearing will return from that killer show by Randy Kohrs, Jack Pearson & Friends. Randy was definitely on fire, and it's always great to see/hear Josh Shilling on keys & vocals. Jack Pearson was unbelievable. Monroeville was high-octane bluegrass, and it was great to present them in their Station Inn debut. And as for that performance by Rob Ickes and Jim Hurst -- well, there are no words in the English language adequate to describe that phenomenal performance.

The closing faculty performance -- loved it all, and it was a beautiful thing to have Michael Witcher's gorgeous take on Roxanna Waltz as the last song of ResoSummit 2012.
