Anybody know why Wechter Scheerhorn stopped making the Elites? The solid wood models? I remember I bought one like 4 years ago, it was a Curly Maple R body bought off of eBay for around $2600 and as of everything I buy I had to sell

Since Sweetwater bought Wechter I'm not sure what's going on. I also bought an Elite just like yours around then, Christmas '05. It was my first nice dobro, still have it. I recorded Panhandle Rag on it, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0lAcSKJjqQ It plays and records really nice.

Shortly after Wechter Guitars was bought by Sweetwater and relocated to Fort Wayne, Abe Wechter reportedly said there were no plans to make anymore of the solid wood "Elite" reso models (which had been built in Wechter's Paw Paw, Michigan workshop).  It appears that since the buyout Sweetwater is primarily interested in marketing inexpensive Chinese-built Wechter brand acoustic guitars.

It was my impression during a conversation I had with Abe shortly before introduction of their Elite-series solid curly maple L-body model [with dimensions, materials and appearance quite similar to a standard L-body Scheerhorn] that both he and Tim were expecting this model to capture a substantial portion of the $2500 - $3500 reso market... but that didn't happen and the few that were built ended up being sold mostly thru an eBay dealer at discounted prices.

I was wondering what the deal was in reference to the "elite" W/S. Thanks again for the info.
Looks like I missed the boat on that deal though. Unless someone has a used one they would like to unload... :-)

Hey Greg if you ever want to part with that beast I would love to have first grabs at it!

I think the guy's name is Tony Hatton on myspace (if you still go there). His e-Bay store is called Pick and Slide Music. Always some fun things to look at there: B-stock Gold tone squarenecks, Asian-built Weissenborn guitars, and once upon a time, I think they had some nice Wechter-Scheerhorn Elites.
