ImageHere are a couple of pictures of the guitar I am building. This is my second from scratch, third counting a kit from Beard. The wood is walnut that I got from a local guy here in Northern CA.  Thanks to Phil, Todd and Kent for advice and encouragement. Brian#2 front

Very nice! I have a question for all of you that have done the same . Do you all make the necks or buy them the same go's for the fret boards?

Thanks Claude, I built the neck from two pieces of walnut with a piece of maple in between. As for the fret board,I built it too. It's also walnut with inlaid maple fret markers. The only wood I bought are the maple bindings. if you're thinking of building one I say go for it. The kit is a good way to start.

Brian, that is coming along very nicely and that is some beautiful walnut! No lack of walnut up around Oroville.  Practically whatver direction you turn in those parts, there's more walnut trees!

I was wondering if you used black walnut or english walnut for the guitar.  It is very nice!!

Looks good so far Burt.  What finish are you going to use on it?  Phil

I think a natural finish would look great on that guitar, don't you Phil?

Most definitely.  I was thinking a satin finish nitrocellulose.

The wood is black walnut, I bought a tree that a guy had taken down and slabbed with a portable mill. Right now I just have a coat of shellac on for a sealer. I have been practicing on the scrap with tru-oil and like the results. I am going to the Healdsburg Guitar Festival this weekend. It's a luthiers show so I should have a chance to look at a lot of finishes and ask a lot of questions. Thanks for the encouragement and input. I'll keep you posted on the progress. Brian
