I haven't looked at this video, and I'm going to take the dog out for a walk right now, but a year or so ago there was a very extensive thread about these Byrd/Robbins videos that never actually made it to TV over on the Steel Guitar Forum..

Look closely, you will notice that the guitar is a 7 string, and as I recall it was a 7 string version of Jerry Byrd's C6th.

I went back and reviewed the videos again and it sure looks like a 6 string to meUndecided.

James, if you have the rest of your evening to read a Steel Guitar Forum thread on the subject before you hit the sack, the link to the thread is below. It's not easy to see that it's 7 string, and in fact it was Gregg McKenna that called that shot on the JDBB in the corresponding thread over there, and I found my post on the SGF where I wrote that. Hey, there's even a thread here on the Nation if it's accessible from the archives!

I was able to find an isolated headstock shot showing that it is a 7-string with 4 on the bottom and 3 on the top.

It's a 7 (I have the video).Smile

Gregg, do you actually know what type of guitar it was? Pre-war Dobro? Regal built Dobro? Something from the era  of the show itself, like a Mosrite Dobro?

According to the Jerry Byrd fanclub site:

Jerry has used a number of various instruments during his career, including a 1920's National Resonator (this can be seen on several of Marty Robbin's Video's dubbed "The Drifter" )

He played a Sho Bud electric steel guitar made by Shot Jackson.  Shot made a few Resonator guitars so he might have played around with one of Shots guitars.  This is pure speculation though.
