Dobro Strings Overview

I shoulda read Greg's post a couple of weeks ago:

"Everything tuned up perfectly open but at the 12th fret and above the 3rd string was ridiculously flat!"

My results, exactly! I don't mind playing on older strings that much, but these strings really take all the fun out of playing (it's Just Strings bulk strings that I'm talking about). And, I've got eleven more sets all carefully ZipLoc'd and ready to go.

I should say that I did not have this problem with Euphonon bulk strings, when I used them a few years ago...

Since AMT/Erik is offering GHS strings in bulk now, can we order 028 GHS strings to replace the 028 in the JS sets we have? That would help with getting the best out of the strings we have on hand. Looks like Erik will have some very attractive pricing for bulk strings exactly matching the GHS 1650 sets!

FWIW, I sent an email to JustStrings describing the poor performance of their bulk strings. If they get back to me, I'll let you know what they have to say...

I got a prompt email reply from Sandra at JustStrings, as follows:

"We have forwarded this to our supplier to try and get information about the problems that have been encountered.  To my knowledge, we’ve not heard from other players about this issue to date.

We’ll be in touch as soon as we have anything to pass on."

Updated the Dobro Strings Overview to add Advanced Music Technology pricing. These are GHS strings and if we buy AMT packaging and quantities of 12 the prices are especially attractive! Go to "Sponsors" and follow the links to AMT for details.

Mike,

On your String Overview, you show the 3d string in the D'Addario EXP42 set as a "26." My sets show it to be a "28."  The EXP42's sound good.  However, I just got some bulk GHS1650's from AMT and they sound great! (Thanks, Eric)  You can get 2 sets for less than the price of one set of EXP42's.

I totally agree with your tip about washing hands before playing, but I've found that if you use a pH neutral soap the results are better.

As to guitar cleaner/polish - I've found nothing better than Zaino Z-2 and Z-6. Use on wood and metal.  Wipe with a "detail quality" microfiber towel after playing.

YMMV

On a string related topic, John Pearse passed away yesterday after a long illness.

humanx,

The gages I recorded were what I found online, but I could have done a typo. I'll fix it soon and update. Thanks for catching the error! I was hoping the Overview would be useful since it was difficult to find one source with all of the related information. Eric posted far more AMT information then I could fit in the chart, so I was hoping the Overview would help point folks in his direction.

I recently started using a microfiber cloth and they work great. Got mine at the local Big Lot store (pack of 6 for $2), so you don't have to overpay for the postage stamp size versions available online.

Mike,

As much good information as there is in the String Overview you have done a great service to all of us.  Thanks for putting it together and providing updates.

humanx:  Thanks for the kind words! I started with lot's of guitar experience but not for resonator. The information and support I have found on the site continues to be a great benefit to me. It is really my pleasure to give something back.

I have now encountered the dreaded Just Strings 028 curse! Two 028 in a row going dead prematurely, and a couple of 056 G strings that sounded pretty dead right from the start. No problems at all with the Musicians Friend strings. I have now placed an order with Advanced Music Technology for a dozen TS1600. The bulk string experiments have been interesting, but Erik's prices are low enough to leave the bulk version behind for now.
