I'm extremely impressed with how Fishman's Aura mic imaging system has finally freed resoists from having to use a mic in order to get a natural amplified sound (thereby eliminating the inevitable feedback and leakage problems associated with micing a reso in situations with high stage volume); however, from the time Fishman's "Nashville" bridge insert reso pickup intended for use with their Aura pedals was introduced I've had significant concerns about its undesirable effects on a reso's acoustic volume, sustain and tonal characteristics. I've also encountered recurring problems with this pickup exhibiting uneven string output levels and/or pronounced resonance peaks in the upper bass frequency range (which tend to make a reso it's installed into less natural sounding and more prone to feedback than if the pickup's string output levels and frequency response were more even).
AMT's "Single Element" reso pickup was developed as an improved alternative to the Fishman Nashville bridge insert pickup, for use either by itself or in combination with one of Fishman's Aura pedals. It consists of a high quality Baggs "Element" piezoelectric undersaddle sensor that's installed into an AMT spiderbridge and allows the use of standard bridge inserts of your choice, or a one-piece insert that's more suitable for use on resos with more than 6 strings.
Features Of AMT's Reso Pickup:
- Compatible with Fishman's Aura reso mic imaging pedals (including the Aura Jerry Douglas and Aura Spectrum DI) as well as Fishman's onboard Aura instrument preamps. Like Fishman's Nashville series reso pickup, AMT's pickup consists of a piezoelectric transducer which senses string vibration directly from the bridge inserts.
- Available either as a
passive pickup or in combination with a state-of-the-art Mi-Si batteryless preamp/buffer for improved sound quality and to eliminate the
need for a costly premium grade low-capacitance cable between the reso
and Aura pedal (Fishman's Nashville pickup is available only
as a passive pickup without buffering... which requires a premium grade
cable to connect it to an Aura pedal in order to avoid degraded sound quality and/or cable noise).
- The Baggs sensor's compact size, low mass and non-absorptive sonic properties have minimal impact on the acoustic sound of a reso it's installed into (unlike Fishman's tusq-copper-maple pickup inserts, which have considerably more mass and substantially different energy transfer/absorption properties than a standard bridge insert). In some cases, a reso can actually sound louder and more responsive with the Baggs sensor installed than with just standard wooden inserts.
- AMT's pickup and output jack assembly is easily installed or removed, with no soldering required (even for the active version including a Mi-Si preamp).
- The 3.4" active sensing length of the AMT pickup enables it to be used on resos with more than 6 strings (Fishman's pickup inserts are designed only for use on a 6 string reso).
- Compared to the Fishman pickup, AMT's inexpensive reso pickup and pickup/preamp combo have far more 'bang for the buck'.

Has anyone here tried Erik's new pickup ?
Mitch,
I'll save you the suspense by telling you that although a few resoists have emailed or called me to get more info about the new AMT/Baggs bridge insert pickup so far no one has been brave enough to order one (which doesn't surprise me at all). I expect that until I'm able to get some photos and sound samples posted most people wanting to have a pickup installed will take the 'safe path' of having a Fishman Nashville pickup installed. Once I get a chance to actively market the AMT pickup I'll probably be offering it with a money back guarantee until some market credibility and references from well known players have been acquired.
Thanks Erik ! Check your email.
I've used a lot of Baggs products over the years and have been satisfied with all I've tried / owned, but never the element pickup. Sound samples / comparisons AMT vs Fishman would be great if possible.
I'm very interesting in this as well as my low D is way too loud. I'd sure like to have more information, price, recording A/B comparision would be great.. Are you saying it won't degrade the acoustice properties of my Maple Meridith? If so, I'd probably be interested in having it.
Well I must say that if I were the type of person to put a pickup in any guitar i would give Erik's stuff a try as i have always found his insights and comments to resonate with me.
Play it 100 times you know it 1000 times you own it .... Dobropilot the bad luftpostmeister
Thanks Erik! I'm interesting in this as well. My low D string sounds good with the new Fishman pickup installed. Otherwise I have a mid-high noise frecuency (3.281 HZ) prominence when I play (plugged) the third (G) string on the second fret on my reso. I was thinking in the Tonebone pz for attenuate this specific frecuency (+D.I. and +the possibility of plugging a second instrument). But is true, the acoustic tonal quality on my reso is not as good as before. I´ll be waiting for some photos, sound samples and information about the installation for this new pickup system from you.
Erik,Would you pm me with the cost for the pickup and spider assembly. I am doing a guitar for a fellow who wants a pickup added. I would like to try one in this guitar. Thanks, Phil
