Backstory: those of us who were fortunate enough to attend last year's Reso Summit were treated to an amazing performance at the closing: Rob Ickes, Michael Alvey and Robinella laid out a beautiful set of standards - it was a captivating performance.
After the show was over, I talked a bit with Michael, and asked about the soulful gospel number (I did not know the name of the tune at the time) - turned out it was Hymn to Freedom by Oscar Peterson. Michael even gave me a copy of their chart to that one. We started playing it occasionally in the little jazz group I play with - its a beautiful tune.
I downloaded one of Oscar's versions (from the Night Train CD) - which I recommend highly listening to.
This tune is included on Rob's new CD - so I thought I would post our chart to it - mostly what Michael gave me.
Notes:
It makes the tune sing to syncopate the changes to match the melody in places like measure 6 and 14 and 15.
Changes in measures 10, 26, and 30 are great examples of substitutions to get from one place to another.
Listen closely to Oscar to hear how the voicings work in places like measure 15 - nice example of the gospel flavored thing there.
Can't comment on Rob's recorded version yet (don't have the CD) - but I am sure it's gonna be sweet.
