Orville Johnson- Naima

Late night, snowbound in Seattle, thought i'd throw this out for your consideration. I think I tried to post this a long time ago when the file sizes were smaller and it was too big. Anyway, it's a cut from my someday to be released duet CD, this one with Susan Pascal on vibraphone and me on my Guernsey. The song is a beauty from John Coltrane. It's in Eb and i play the melody in G tuning but lowered my low B to Bb and low G to Eb so I could imitate the pedal tones that the bass player plays on Coltrane's recording during Susan's solo.

Freddy Holm " With A Little Help From My Friends "

Hi guys,

Yup, I'm back with a Beatles tune. It's a kind of a seasick version

It's one take with my Beard E.

and it's in the key of A with a G tuning. No capo.

Anyways, A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to you all!

I'll Be Home For Christmas

Merry Christmas from my home, Alaska! Here is my latest effort, a swinging rendition of I'll Be Home For Christmas. Joining me via the internet is my son Dan "band in a boy" Booth on bass and mandolin rhythm. The tuning is the one I've grown fond of, EBDGBD, although it definitely works in standard G tuning. Here is a little picture showing what things look like at home this time of year. Happy Holidays!

Orville Johnson-Bagpipe Jigs

This is from a session I did for Jori Chisholm For his CD Bagpipe Revolution. Bagpipe and dobro. It's an interesting sound. The first half of the tune is a jig (in 6/8 time, of course) and the bagpipe is tuned to A440. I'm pretty much playing a rhythm part since the bagpipe is wall to wall (kind of hard for a bagpipe to "lay back"). You might find the 6/8 roll pattern I'm doing to be interesting. The second half is played on a different type of pipe that is tuned to A480 and I play acoustic guitar on that section. Jori had me slide up as we finished the first half and then faded that into the new tuning. Neat effect.

PS downloading disabled since its not my tune.

The Ultimate Fishman Aura Test???

First I want to say, this thing REALLY rocks!!

I used it at a gig this weekend, and it blew me ( and the sound engineer ) away!

Bye-bye feedback and microphones that makes you stand in one spot!!

That may not be news to some of you, but I'm really excited

In this clip, I recorded my Beard E with my Neumann KM 184 and simultaneous recorded the Aura with the preset 14. Which is a Neumann KM 84 simulation, which again is not far from the KM 184.

Now folks, this clip have no eq, compression or effects, just so that you can hear the real difference.

The Aura sounds amazingly realistic, and with some tweak of the eq, I'd probably get them pretty close.

But again I'm not really sure I want to, because I like the Aura sound too..

Let me know what you think.

First 8 bars are the KM 184

Next 8 the Aura.

Important! The pick up is of course the JD under saddle pickup by Fishman.

The Rose with Harp & Dobro using only Fishman/Aura

I noticed after uploading that the audio is distorted even though my orginal is not. I tried uploading again and again and keep getting error messages to enter Artist and Tile as required fields, even though the Artist and Title are listed. So sorry, the site will not allow me to upload again to replace the audio file.

My wife and I did a duet at a wedding this past Saturday. During the wedding we played this audio clip, the Rose on Harp and Dobro. I thought some of you might be interested in the sound of the Fishman / Aura. I'm using my Brazillian Rosewood-Spruce Meredith. I did not use a mic at all. Fishman > Aura > J48 Di > Mackie Mixer > Inear Monitor Transmitter > Zoom H2.

As a note of humor, this wedding had some strandard things happen. You'll notice in the recording a couple of women talking to us while performing. I'm not good at talking while peforming a solo. Some children, left unattended were throwing rocks at the side of the building, 3 feet from my head, until I told them to stop. The parents as usual let the kids have their fun. They later rolled a small boulder down a slope which missed my equipment. After some child was told not to play my wifes harp, he went away, then came running by within seconds running his hand across all the strings of the harp. By the end of the wedding the bride and groom got real sloppy drunk, could'nt find our pay. Bride was in big drunken tears. We finally got a check out of them. But, I gained the ability to play dobro while looking over my shoulder for flying rocks. And it paid better than Bluegrass.
