Hi Folks,
As promised, I will be posting tabs and sound files from my archived material. There are quite a few 'goodies' that will appeal to players of all levels.

Enjoy.

Here is the tab for one of my many favorites, 'Faded Love' - unfortunately there is no accompanying sound file.

"Blue Hound Dog," a Tune We Wrote for Josh Graves

3:31 minutes (3.22 MB)

Bob Flanders, Vocals, Guitar
Ron "Buz" Butler, Reed Dobro
Ken Mellon, Harmonica

"Blue Hound Dog" was recorded for Josh Graves on May 13, 2005.

Sunday Morning Downtown - GR3 - Plus "From Whence"

3:47 minutes (3.46 MB)

Here's the song I wrote and recorded as a contribution to GR3. I actually rushed the recording to beat the deadline (silly in hindsight huh). So I wasn't 100% pleased with the result - but in my experience - I probably could have re-recorded 100 more times and still not been totally happy. At some point you just have to give in.

The reso is a 2004 Scheerhorn L-Body maple (seen in my album). There's also a weissenborn break - played on a Burgin Weissenborn copy. Guitar is an HD-28v. Also an electric bass. I played all instruments.

Sweet Georgia Brown

3:40 minutes (2.94 MB)

This song became famous due to the fabulous Django Reinhardt
who only had 3 fingers left as most of y`all probably know!

I have all my fingers available but cannot come close to Django.

However, I do believe that this is a nice version though.

Scheerhorn rosewood/spruce soundclip

1:30 minutes (1.37 MB)

Here is a soundclip of my new Scheerhorn rosewood/spruce. I have chosen a slow Ivan Rosenberg tune to demonstrate the potential of this guitar. Of course such a soundclip can only reproduce a limited amount of the full potential of this or any other instrument - but at least it's a trial.
In a few weeks I will get the chance to do the same thing with a S/W Rob Ickes model. This might get an interesting comparison.

Floyd Jasper's 'Rolling Rock'

1:12 minutes (567.19 KB)

I've been working on this tune for awhile.

It's called 'Rolling Rock' and was written by Floyd Jasper. It's from his '3 Jaspers, No Waiting' CD, jasperguitars.com.

I have 4 of his CD's and an instructional DVD.

His playing is absolutely some of the finest you'll hear. It's amazing how clean and fast his playing is!

My version is a bit slower and contains alot fewer notes, but I have the basic melody down. If you get ahold of some of his music, you'll see what I mean.

Enjoy!

3:32 minutes (2.84 MB)

Hi Y'all

This is a Guy Clarke song with only a very little dobro in it. But there is a small dobro solo in the midde though. Untill my new Clinesmith guitar arrives at the end of the year I am still using my Lebeda with great pleasure. I hope you folks like it!

Very best regards,

JS from Amsterdam

Elements

2:12 minutes (3.02 MB)

Here's a track a recorded a while back and just realized i never posted. It's me on guitar and dobro. I added a second track of guitar, playing up on the neck with some chorus effects to try and emulate the sound of a mandolin; that attempt failed miserably, but overall it sounds ok. Let me know what you think of the dobro playing.

New recording set-up + new dobro tune

2:38 minutes (3.61 MB)

Hello all, I wanted to post this tune that I recorded last night using my new digital recording gear. I recorded into a MXL V63M condenser mic, through a Lexicon Lambda audio interface, and into my laptop running Cubase LE. A little EQ and reverb, and here we have it. Any comments on my playing or the recording are greatly appreciated.
P.S. I was playing my Wechter/ Scheerhorn 6510F

Here's my attempt to play an original classical piece on my Beard E Model. There's more songs on www.myspace.com/eastfoldpicker if you guys want to check it out. Thanks!

Eastfold Tune # 1

1:18 minutes (2.98 MB)

Hey you guys, I've decided to post a couple of more songs here, since the sound on MySpace is not so good. And feel free to critizise and comment on these tunes. Everythings is recorded through my pc running cubase 4. My microphones are a Neumann KM 184, AKG S 1000, GA Ribbon and a Roede K2. Thanks again for your response.

Clockticks

2:54 minutes (3.99 MB)

Here's a melancolic piece I wrote today. Everything you hear is my Beard E. I used a e-bow on it to get that organ sound, and I scratched on the sound screens to get the clock sound. I played a few solo's on it, but decided to keep the first take. It's sloppy at times, but I think it has a good feeling to it. The song might be to long though.. Anyhow, hope you find it interesting :D

Reso-pop

1:55 minutes (3.07 MB)

Here I go again.. :D Here's another song I made today, I guess I'm in a creative period now. Like my last post " Clockticks" this is just my Beard E Maple. I'm picking on sound screens, using the E-bow, and playing the bass-lines without picks. It turned out kinda popish, I think. But I'm fully aware of that it won't be on the Billboard Top 100 :D

Eleanor Rigby

1:05 minutes (1.98 MB)

Ok, here's my contribution to the Beatlesmania on RN  I don't have any Beatles cd's at home right now, which is a bleedin' shame of course, so I played by memory. Which again, isn't always too good  So the song is a bit amputated. It's all in standard G-Tuning.

Something

1:48 minutes (3.3 MB)

This is the most beautiful Beatles song IMO. Sinatra always referred to this as a Lennon/Mcartney song, which is completely wrong of course. It's a Harrison song. Again, this is not the complete song since I had to play it by memory.. :)

Hey Jude

2:48 minutes (3.84 MB)

You guys got me going now, so it's all your fault :D But I promise this will be the last Beatles tune in a while  Gotta work on my own stuff also. As the previous Beatles post this is also by memory, so bear with me :) Thanks for listening!

Waves

2:31 minutes (3.45 MB)

No Beatles tune this time.. But I hope you like it anyway. Again, everything you hear is my Beard E Maple, every sound, every beat, every plink-plonk, everything.. I find it very interesting to limit myself to use just the reso when I record these days. Kinda inspired by the movie director Lars Von Trier's dogme rules :D You will get the most out of this one if you have a sub-woofer or something that gives you that low end. Anyhow, enough said, enjoy :D Oh, it's standard G tuning.

Strawberry Fields Forever

1:33 minutes (2.83 MB)

Warning! Warning! This piece was NOT meant for a dobro   And I did it just for the hell of it :) The melody and chord structure is so busy, so it doesn't fit the dobro at all IMO. "Then why are you posting it, EFP?" Because you are my reso buddies, and I want you to hear it
It's in standard G-tuning and in the key of impossible :) It's all one take with my Beard E.

An AKslider and Eastfoldpicker collaboration

1:08 minutes (2.08 MB)

First I must say that the internet can be a fantastic thing! Not only do one meet good people with the same interests by just clicking the mouse, but as in this case one can also make music together, thousands of miles apart. :) Greg, aka AKslider, sent me his great version of Let It Snow, and I put it into my computer and played bass, mandolin, guitar, jingle bells and put some harmony vocals on it to get in the Christmas mood :) It turned out to be a boogie-version
So from us to you, A Merry Christmas

The Chimney Waltz

1:10 minutes (2.15 MB)

I wrote a waltz today :) . It has a X-mas feeling to it, I guess. What you hear in this clip is my Beard Vintage R. My beloved Beard E is under surgery these days... I'm having a Schertler Basik pick-up system installed.. I've arranged some strings and I play a mandolin to spice it up a bit.. I use the standard G-tuning. Hope you like it :)

Coming Up For Air

3:00 minutes (3.44 MB)

After hearing great posts from MartinG and McHorn an others, I was inspired to make an instrumental again. I'm glad to see/hear that the Sound Bite section is so alive :D

Well, this is a mellow/jazzy piece with a 80's kinda chorus :)
The opening sound is cool, which is picking behind the bar and sliding between 5th and 3th fret.
I know it's not a new thing, but still it's cool , I think :)

As usual I play my Beard E, and I've programmed the strings and the drums.
I also play the bass, Rhodes and a 80's kinda distortion guitar.
It's an open G-tuning in the key of D.

Beard E tension screw change

0:13 minutes (511.85 KB)

Here's a sound clip of the tension screw change on my Beard E.
I tightened the screws exactly the same and everything in the recording process was exactly the same..

First four bars = Steel screw
Next four bars = Brass screw

You be the judge..

Dog Tired Redux

2:57 minutes (2.71 MB)

Well this is the first tune I wrote on dobro. I recorded it for the original Global Resonations CD. This is basically the same arrangement, but the recording is a little better. The playing is questionable. We are going to be re-recording this in a studio pretty soon as a dobro banjo duet to close out a CD. It's really cool with a little banjo filling it out (did I say that out load).

Books & Cigars

2:57 minutes (3.38 MB)

I did post this little bit melancholic song earlier a few months ago. It was a rough sketch then. In the meantime it has evolved to this form. In this arrangement I think the add of the double bass is matching well the dobro. I hope you like it.

D Major 7 piece

1:59 minutes (3.63 MB)

Here's my first piece in a D tuning. Actually it's a D major 7 tuning. From low to high: D A D F# A C#. The strings are a G tuning set, so I guess I should put on a D tuning set to get the right tension. :) I'm playing my Beard Vintage R, using the KM 184 Neumann microphone. And I can hear I've been a little heavy on the reverb  Anyhow, hope you like it.

...

Help!

0:55 minutes (2.1 MB)

I'm back with a mop top tune  I think it's sloppy played, cause I was actually just testing a microphone called Neumann U87.. Now that's a fantastic piece of metal  It's especially good on vocals, but sounds great on the reso too, I think. It's a pretty expensive microphone... Around $3000.. I know, you're right, that's the price for a killer reso

I'm also drooling over a Universal Audio LA 610 preamp. Has anyone tried it? I think AKslider is using one.. I'm I right, Greg?

Old Dangerfield

6:23 minutes (5.85 MB)

Does anyone have a tab, sound file and/or video to assist in learning Old Dangerfield?

The B and C parts are easy, it's the A part I'm spending time on. It's a very cool, syncopated blues riff.

I have Rob Ickes DVD where he goes a little into it. I also have Bill Monroe's.

I'm currently learning it from a sound clip of a Mandolin playing it. As it is a Mandolin tune, I'm learning it note for note like a Mando player would do it. I'm getting it, but it'd be useful to see what other dobro players have done with it.

Moody Allen

1:44 minutes (3.16 MB)

Here's a short clip I wrote while I was testing some pre amps and compressors.
What you hear is my Beard E through a Chandler LTD pre amp and a Chandler LTD compressor.
It's called the Germanium series :)
The microphone is my Neumann KM 184, and the good old E-Bow is back too :)
It's in standard G-tuning.
Hope you like it :)

Resiano

2:08 minutes (3.91 MB)

I wanted to do a piece with just a piano and a reso. And here's what I came up with.
I play both the piano and dobro. My Beard E has a tuning I don't quite know what to call. From low to high it's F A C G C D.
Oh, and I also programmed a subtle drum beat to go under it all. Couldn't help myself
Hope you like it :)

Here's a music quiz, I stole a piece of a melody around 00:45, what song is it :?: :)

Weissenborn test

1:05 minutes (1.99 MB)

Here's the Weissie I'm thinking of buying. Referring to post:

http://www.reso-nation.org/viewtopic.php?t=5242

What I use here is a Neumann KM 184 microphone through a Chandler pre amp and compressor.
No heavy settings and absolutely no EQ. A small dash of reverb is added, though.
It may sound a little too bright in my ears, but that can be the microphone. I also tried it with another mic and it didn't sound that bright.
Anyways, let me know what you think. And PLEASE be honest..
This thing is pretty expensive.

Weissie test #2

0:36 minutes (1.11 MB)

Here's another Weissie test clip.
It's a sloppy played bluegrass-ish tune I came up with messing around :)
No reverb and no EQ.

The last weissenborn test

0:39 minutes (1.2 MB)

Ok guys, the moment of truth :)
I have before me two guitars made by a Norwegian luthier called Harald Hougaard.

http://www.hougaardguitars.com/conan.html

The dark one is a Vintage Knutsen which he calls "Dragonfly" and the light one is a Hawaiian Cona which he calls " Conan".
Here's a clip of them both.
First the "Dragonfly" then the "Conan".
Which one should I buy???
Both or none, maybe?

I know they're different guitars, but P L E A S E give your honest opinion, because I can't seem to make up my mind... :?

I promise I won't bother you with more tests

I Blinked Once

2:35 minutes (3.55 MB)

Here's a clip of my final weissie choice: the Knutsen Weissenborn made by luthier Harald Hougaard.
The guitar is named Dragonfly :D

It's a great song by Steve Forbert.
I put some vocals on it too, couldn't help myself..

And thanks guys, for helping me choosing the right guitar :)

Turkey in the Straw

2:56 minutes (2.69 MB)

Here's my biannual contribution. I got a 16 track machine off ebay last summer and am just getting around to learning how to use it. This Turkey was the guinea pig. :D

The end of the world

3:32 minutes (3.24 MB)

This is a cut of The end of the world.Marty Stuart helped me out on my new CD and is playing mandolin this is one we did. It's not mixed or mastered yet.

Freddy Holm " Svalbard Rag "

1:24 minutes (3.21 MB)

It's been a while since I posted a dobro instrumental, so I thought it was about timeSmile

It's a tune I wrote this morning and it's a one take, and no overdubs.

The signal chain is a Neumann U87 --> Vintech x73i pre amp --> Chandler Germanium Compressor --> RME ADI-2 converter --> Cubase 4.

I close mic'ed the Beard E to get the "bassy" feeling, and I think the sound fits the tune well.

Have a listen and let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Freddy

The Wabash Blues

2:35 minutes (2.37 MB)

Here's an instrumental version of an old tune that a friend of mine has been singing lately. The internet tells me that it was written in 1921 by Fred Meinken and Dave Ringle.

Gary,

East Snook, TX

Freddy Holm " Funkygrass"

2:27 minutes (3.94 MB)

I was fooling around with my old pal Beard Vintage R this morning and this is what came out of itLaughing

The guitar was all dusty 'cause I haven't played it for a long while. The strings are really old, so therefore the intens buzz on the first stringSmile (yes, I will change them soon )

But I'm so in love with the tone of this guitar, so as I've mentioned earlier, I'm glad I didn't sell it.

(at some point I planned to sell it to finance a computer, what was I thinking!! )

I play all the instruments, and I didn't quite know what to call the song, but it's kinda funky so I called it Funkygrass.

Not very innovative, I know..

Freddy Holm "Jealous Guy"

1:56 minutes (3.56 MB)

Here's my version of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy". It's a kinda free interpretationSmile
I'm playing my Beard E and it's in the key of D with a G tuning.
Hope you'll enjoy.

Gary Mortensen - Whispering Grass

2:11 minutes (2 MB)

This old tune has been going through my head lately, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I've got recordings of it by the Ink Spots from 1940 and Sandy Denny from the mid 70's.
